Museum
History
The Natural History Museum and Local Learning Network was founded by seeing the value of the pile of lifeless and worthless garbage samples. However, with the support of the Faculty of Science and Technology in terms of buildings and budget,
The lifeless garbage samples became meaningful, valuable, alive, and had a soul and could tell stories to people. The work was developed, and the museum’s name was changed as follows:
In 2002, under the name of the Natural History Museum and Local Plant Center, the work was divided into 2 main parts: preserving reference samples and cooperating with the network for research. Part 1 was preserving samples, including 3 rooms of animal reference samples and 1 room of herbal exhibitions. Part 2 was participating in research, including research on Pattani Bay, research on Pru Lan Kwai wetlands, and research on shellfish, in collaboration with Dr. Kes Svennen from the Netherlands. The results of the research collaboration resulted in local academic data and knowledge being used in the exhibition, creating stories about the samples to be more meaningful and spiritual, such as the research on shellfish.
This resulted in a large number of shellfish samples in the lower Gulf of Thailand, so that 1 room of shellfish samples could be displayed for reference. The book The Molluscs of the Southern Gulf of Thailand was one volume in this early period. Most of the work is to organize the system, organize the data, and display samples for people to visit.
2003-2004, under the original Museum of Natural History and Local Plants, the work is still in the same way as the first year to lead to its completion, such as data on the names of samples, both common and scientific names, display formats, and preservation of samples, including translation of herbal medicine texts, which have academic value, especially the ancient medical texts of Dr. That Uthaiphan, jointly researching and collecting data with the Biology Department to create the Pattani Bay Master Plan in 2005 under the new name, the Museum of Natural History and Local Herbs Center. However, the work in the past has been continuously developed to be more complete, and new work has begun to be added, such as:
collecting more samples, improving and developing the storage room for scientific instruments used in the past, community service work under various projects such as the Mobile Museum Project, the Tropical Forest Network Project in the 3 Southern Border Provinces, which received budget support from SGP/PTF UNDP, and adjusting the structure of the agency’s executive committee with the Yanamoli Museum,
the aquarium of the Department of Fisheries Technology and the villagers’ network participating in the work to expand the network even more.
2006-2007 under the name of the Local Natural History Museum
The organization’s work direction has begun to be more visible in the 5 missions:
1. Animal and plant specimen care and collection work, with 3 animal specimen exhibition rooms, 1 herbarium exhibition room, and 1 specimen preparation room.
2. Teaching and learning support work, which is the result of mission 1 and collaboration with community networks, has provided the museum with academic references and community study areas that can be integrated with various subjects, including ecology, environmental science, biological techniques, and biology. It is therefore another source of learning for students in various subjects, as well as interested persons and students from various schools who visit the museum on various occasions.
3. Community academic service work, under various activities, such as the mobile museum project, bird-watching camps, science week activities, and children’s day activities. The museum has participated in creating a local curriculum for primary school students on the conservation, restoration, and management of environmental and coastal resources, etc.
4. Research work, such as the project to promote network relations. Peat swamp-sand-mangrove forests for conservation and restoration of wisdom in sustainable forest management and the project to conserve and utilize biodiversity in the Su-ngai Kolok River Basin, supported by the budget from the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
5. Create learning resources in the form of knowledge centers, such as nurseries, bird-watching areas, and nature study trails, 2007-present, under the new name of the Natural History Museum and Local Learning Network. During this period, the museum continued to operate under the 5 main missions and became more intensive, especially in working with community networks in the 3 southern border provinces under the academic service project “Youth Research,” which is a project that the museum has been responsible for and operating since 2009, supported by the budget from Prince of Songkla University. In addition, it has joined as a partner in the Sai Buri River Basin Research Project Phase 1-2 and the project to create food and occupation security for vulnerable men and women in the southern region of Thailand.
